Nakuule Rotary Hospital
The History
The idea of setting up Nakuule Health Centre emerged out of the thoughts and deliberations of three key persons, namely;
- Hajj Kassim Kasasa
- Ssalongo Muliika
- Late Charles Kiwanuka Bweete.
Standing by an anthill, in 1994, the trio exchanged ideas on three development projects, which included; ekitawuluzi kya Kabaka; a technical school and a health facility.
In their wisdom, the establishment of a health facility took the day and the idea was sold to the community by Mr. John Minchisela, the LC1 Chairman.
During a village meeting, John (now deceased) presented the idea which was easily bought by the residents.
The residents overwhelmingly handed Hajj Kassim Kasasa the responsibility of becoming the Chairperson of the Nakuule Development Committee.
The other committee members were; the then Gombolola Chief of Nabweru sub-county Mr Robert Mubiru (RIP), Charles Kiwanuka Bwette (RIP), Ms Miriam
Nalwoga, Sulaiman Muwonge as the Committee secretary, Ssalongo Muliika and the late John Minchisela represented the Local Council.
One community member offered to undertake the task of producing architectural drawings of the building and thereafter, Hajj Kassim offered the first trips of bricks and sand, which ignited the construction process.
Kassim then invited Mr Ibrahim Mukiibi (R.I.P) the then Ambassador of Uganda to Egypt, as the chief guest for the launch of the construction.
It is chronicled that Ambassador Ibrahim contributed generously towards the project.
Community members also joined the fundraising drive with each donating a minimum of five bricks, in cash or kind.
The Local Council offered 30% of locally mobilized revenue towards the project, which significantly boosted the progress of the construction.
By 1996, the construction was largely done but the services could not be offered because the necessary equipment and medical supplies had not been secured.
The Development Committee decided to register the facility as a government health centre to attract the requisite resources and christened it Nakuule Health Community Centre.
The facility was christened Nakuule Health Community Centre and the Development Committee decided to register the facility as a government health centre to attract the requisite resources.
After inspection of the facility by officials from the government and finding it worthwhile, one Robert Muwanika was posted to the facility as the first medical personnel. The government also started to bring in medical supplies.
Since then, the facility has attracted more and more patients to the current tune of over 4000 annually. This has made it overstretched in terms of infrastructure and personnel.
Why a New Facility?
Nansana is the largest municipality in the country with a population growth rate of 4.1% above the national growth rate of 3.03%.
The population has grown from 62,044 in 2002 to about 467,000 while the public health facilities have not expanded significantly to accommodate the numbers.
The number of patients served at the facility has increased from 20 patients per month in 1994 to about 800 in 2021.
This growth is against a facility that has not expanded since establishment making it overstretched in infrastructure and personnel.
What the new facility will offer
- An out- patient department that can handle 400 patients daily.
- Children, female and male wards with general admission of up to 40 beds.
- A maternity ward of 20 beds.
- Two fully equipped operating theatres.
- Laboratory facilities.
